On September 3, 2024, Sony announced that Concord would be taken offline just ten days after launch, with full refunds issued, sending shockwaves through the gaming community. Comparisons were quickly drawn to other infamous flops like The Day Before.
The real surprise wasn’t that Concord failed, but how quickly it happened. Many expected Sony to give the game a few months before quietly shutting it down. Instead, the shutdown was swift and public, even if Sony claims it’s only temporary.
Despite Concord's short lifespan, there are plenty of other games to capture the attention of its displaced players. Deadlock fans on Reddit have extended an invitation to Concord players, encouraging them to try Valve’s new game, which is gaining momentum and excitement.
This invitation sparked some humorous comments, with one user joking, “32 new players incoming,” and another adding, “Can the servers handle tens of new players?” Despite the jokes, many Concord players requested invites to join Deadlock, and Reddit users were quick to accommodate them.
However, there’s a catch—Deadlock is currently exclusive to PC, with no plans for console ports. This leaves former Concord players who only own a PS5 out of luck, as they won’t be able to access the game.
While Concord may return in the future, potentially as a free-to-play title, the chances of a major comeback, akin to Final Fantasy 14, are slim. Given the saturation of the Games as a Service (GaaS) market, Concord fans may be better off embracing Deadlock rather than risking more disappointment.
